Maskne - the cause, treatment and prevention

Maskne - the cause, treatment and prevention
Maskne, that acne breakout everyone seems to be getting from the increased wearing of masks. But why?
Acne mechanica is the correct terminology which describes breakdown of skin quality due to friction leading to nasty lumps and bumps under the skin and even infection.
First we add the rubbing of a synthetic material on the delicate skin, don't forget the tiny itchy fibers or bleaching agents used in the materials used.
Second we add a moist environment from our breath - this warm and damp environment in the perfect environment for bacteria to thrive!
When we add the two together we have not only a breakdown in skin integrity and immunity, but a bacterial attack on our already fragile microbiome. Hello Acne!

But don't worry, there are ways we can avoid and reduce these nasty breakouts.

  1. Don't forget your normal routine - being in isolation means we can forget to do all the essential steps that have been set out for us by our Skin Therapist. Yes, this means double cleansing!
  2. Skip the make up when possible.
  3. If you don't exfoliate, now is the time to start - exfoliating with an AHA/BHA can assist in keeping the pores clean.
  4. Change your mask when possible or whenever if feels damp.
  5. Make sure you nourish your skin and listen to it - it may be temperamental so some usual products may not agree with you. Chat to your Skin Therapist online to check what's going on with your skin.
Some products we love to keep it simple when reversing or preventing maskne are:

Aspect Dr Multi B Plus Serum

Vitamin B is not just the balancer of our skin, it also loves to repair any damage caused to our epidermis and the barrier protecting the skin. When the barrier is broken, our skin just won't recover and heal leading to a cycle of breakouts.

Skincare Essential

Aspect Dr Multi B Plus Serum was recommended to me by VCI about 3 years ago. At the time I was a little worried that I wouldn't see noticeable results, I was worried it wasn't as good as other vitamin serums. I shouldn't have worried. I noticed a difference in skin texture within a fortnight, my skin felt smoother and more hydrated. It's hard to describe but my skin just looked healthier and fresher. It really is a product that should be a part of your daily skincare routine.

Osmosis MD Rescue

This product is an ‘epidermal repair’ serum which means it's designed to heal the most damaged skins. It works by adding oxygen molecules directly to the surface of the skin. Like the rest of our body our skin needs oxygen to recover and extra oxygen will facilitate a better wound healing environment. specifically designed for very compromised and inflamed skins.

Aspect Dr Resveratrol Moisturising Cream

One of the best ways to prevent barrier breakdown is to create a new one. Not only will Resveratrol keep any moisture in the skin but it is rich in antioxidants and fermented Japanese Knotwood. This is a probiotic for the skin to help tackle the bacteria which may be starting to grow out of control.

Best moisturizer ever!
Cassie May on Mar 14, 2019

After having a microdermabrasion and being told my skin was dehydrated I decided to go back to using Aspect Dr. Since using the products my skin has not only become clearer, but is much more plump. Makeup now glides on beautifully as opposed to flaking off on bits and becoming patchy due to how dry my skin was. I love how soft my face is after moisturizing - it’s literally as soft as a babies bottom, and doesn’t leave me oily or greasy. Do yourself a favor and try this incredibly hydrating moisturizer today, you won’t regret it!

Aspect Probiotic Sleep Mask

This one is a added bonus for skins that are struggling to get on top of the stressed skin. With a combination of probiotics, enzymes, antioxidants and Vitamin B, the skin will be left nourished, buffed and relaxed. This can be used as a 15 minute treatment or as a night time moisturiser.
