OILY SKIN OVERVIEW

Oily skin is quite common among teens and young adults. It is the result of overproduction of sebum from the sebaceous glands, which are located under the skin’s surface. Sebum is made of fats that have an oily feel, and helps keep the skin protected and moisturised. Oily skin often occurs around the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) and has a greasy or shiny appearance. If you have oily skin, you may be prone to enlarged pores, develop blemishes and be more prone to acne breakouts.

What causes oily skin?

Oily skin is caused by a number of reasons, including stress, genetics, hormones, humidity, diet, using the incorrect skincare and makeup products, overwashing the face and the environment.

How do I get rid of oily skin?

Oily skin can be managed by implementing a few changes. Cleansing the skin regularly with a gentle cleanser is the first step. Next, consider adding ingredients such as Salicylic Acid, into the skincare routine. Salicylic Acid helps exfoliate the skin, remove dead skin cells, and remove excess oil and debris from the skin. Ensure you moisturise your skin regularly. It is a common misconception that oily skin does not need moisturiser, but in fact it does! Oily skin can be caused by stripping the skin of its natural oils, which leads to an overproduction of sebum.

What is a good routine for oily skin?

A good skincare routine for someone with oily skin would include a gentle cleanser. We recommend the Cosmedix Purity Clean for a gentle and exfoliating cleanser to remove dead skin cells, dirt, debris, makeup and excess oil. Adding a serum as a targeted treatment can help regulate oil production, without stripping the skin, and helps keep skin clear and clarified. We recommend the Aspect Dr Problem Skin Serum as it is non-greasy and helps manage oils, mattifies and hydrates skin for a rejuvenated look. To learn more, read our guide on the best serums for oily skin. A moisturiser will keep your skin feeling hydrated throughout the day. We recommend the Aspect Dr Ultra Light Hydration as it is a lightweight moisturiser that helps soothe irritated skin, doesn’t clog pores, provides hydration and has a mattifying finish. Lastly, using sunscreen in the daytime will give you the best results. SkinCeuticals Ultra Facial Defense SPF50 is an oil-free formula, non-comedogenic and provides hydration for long lasting protection.
