PIGMENTATION OVERVIEW

Pigmentation can occur as freckles, melasma, sunspots and birthmarks. It is a change in skin colour, often resulting in uneven or patchy areas on the skin. As our skin becomes more exposed to the sun, the skin becomes prone to discolouration and pigmentation.  Other contributing factors include skin type, skin injury, acne, pregnancy, hormone imbalances and genetics.

The two types of pigmentation are hyperpigmentation, where the skin is darker than the rest of the skin, and hypopigmentation where the skin produces less melanin resulting in white patches on the skin.

How do I get rid of pigmentation?

Pigmentation can be hard to treat. The first step to treating pigmentation is by adding a pigmentation serum into your routine. Some key ingredients to look out for are Vitamin C, Glycolic Acid or Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Using sunscreen in the morning is essential to keeping pigmentation at bay. A sunscreen with a minimum of SPF30 is best, and an SPF50+ is even better. Reapply sunscreen throughout the day for best results.

What are the benefits of a pigmentation serum?

Pigmentation serums can reduce the appearance of brown spots, dark patches, exfoliate the skin, clear congestion and maintain the skin's radiance and uniformity.

What is the best serum for pigmentation?

This depends on the type of pigmentation and its severity. Some popular options for the best serum for pigmentation include the Aspect Pigment Punch+, with Vitamin C to brighten skin. You may want to consider the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum as a brightening and protecting serum. To read more about pigmentation serums, check out our best pigmentation serum guide.
