Serums vs Moisturisers
Aside from the obvious need for a cleanser and sunscreen you also have an array of serums and moisturisers available. But which do you choose, and why?
Compared to moisturisers, serums are thinner in consistency to penetrate deeper into your skin. Usually containing a high concentration of beneficial ingredients, serums are used for targeting or preventing specific skin concerns. Moisturisers are a thicker consistency and are primarily used to hydrate the skin and prevent water loss. Whilst they can contain beneficial ingredients these do not penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin. Using the right combination of serum and moisturiser tailored to your specific needs will provide the best result.
Anti-ageing serum and moisturiser
If you have no other skin concerns other than to prevent premature signs of ageing (lucky you!), your skin care should be helping to fight premature ageing caused by free radicals and pollution.
When used in the morning the SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum protects against environmental stressors. With 15% pure Vitamin C, 1% Vitamin E and 0.5% Ferulic Acid it also brightens your complexion and address fine lines and wrinkles.
Ageing skin serum and moisturiser
For skin that is already showing signs of ageing you would benefit from a combination of ingredients such as Vitamin A to promote a healthy dermis and epidermis, hyaluronic acid for hydrated and supple skin and MEP technology to combat the ageing effects caused by decreased oestrogen as we age.
Pigmented skin serum and moisturiser
Serums rich in active ingredients that penetrate deep into the skin are needed to treat existing pigmentation concerns. SPF protection is required to prevent pigmentation darkening and further pigmentation forming.
Neoretin Discrom Serum Booster Fluid acts on all stages of pigment production. Containing Kojic Acid, Niacinamide and Lightening Peptides as well as Salicylic Acid for exfoliation and RetinSphere Technology - a Retinol with high efficacy and tolerability. Can be used both morning and night prior to moisturiser or SPF.
Protect pigmentation darkening and new pigmentation from forming with the very high UVA/UVB broad-spectrum moisturising SPF cream. SkinCeuticals Ultra Facial Defense SPF50 is non-comedogenic and provides 24hrs hydration in an ultra-light texture. Perfect for daily wear and also as a base for makeup.
Containing a cocktail of 9 highly concentrated active ingredients, Dermaceutic Mela Cream is designed to significantly reduce the appearance of uneven pigmentation and dark spots. Used at night, this potent formula needs to be introduced slowly to your skin routine. Start by using this product once or twice a week and gradually build up your frequency over several weeks.
Redness and/or sensitive skin serum and moisturiser
Sensitive skin or skin that is prone to redness or rosacea needs gentle formulas that will nourish, protect and restore the skins barrier.
An epidermal repair serum designed to calm inflammation, neutralise toxins and activate DNA repair to address skin texture and age spots. Osmosis MD Rescue contains Arctalis, a marine active found in the deep cold waters off Greenland, which amplifies the skin’s ability to retain moisture while boosting natural glow and protecting it from blue light damage.
Protect, restore and improve skin quality with Profhilo Haenkenium moisturiser. Haenkenium, a patented Salvia haenkei extract enriches the formula and slows down the degradation process of hyaluronic acid, caused by free radicals, therefore prolonging the benefits to the skin. Antioxidants protect sensitive skins against free radical damage while the gentle, yet powerfully hydrating formula, sooth and reduce redness.
