3 essential items for every decade

As we begin to age we start to notice lots of different changes occurring within the skin. Whether it be starting to notice a loss in skin elasticity, a few fine lines or wrinkles starting to appear, an uneven skin tone or even the effects of hormonal changes. These changes can be a little stressful at times and it's important that you change your skincare routine accordingly as skincare products that may have worked for your skin in your 20’s may differ as you age and need to be adjusted based on your current concerns and skin needs.

Below are my selections of the top three essential items for every decade.

Skincare in your 20’s

One of the most important things you can do in your early 20’s is start building a sufficient skincare routine to help prepare and prevent your skin for the future. As your skin may not be showing signs of ageing just yet, protecting your skin from environmental damage is going to be the best kind of prevention in the long term.

Protection from UV rays is the best prevention from pigmentation and ageing. SkinCeuticals Ultra Facial Defense SPF50 is a non-comedogenic light textured formula that protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays. Apply this sunscreen as the last step in your morning routine and then re-apply throughout the day as necessary.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B) is a great all-rounder skincare ingredient that everyone should be using in their skincare routines. Synergie Vitamin B serum helps boost the skin immunity, strengthens the barrier of the skin, maintains oil flow and increases hydration. This serum can be used either in the morning or at night before applying moisturiser.

Exfoliating is an essential key in your skincare routine to ensure there are no excess dead skin cell build up and to also ensure all your products are penetrating nicely into the skin so they can work their preventative magic to their full ability. Cosmedix Purity Detox Scrub has a unique combination of chemical and manual exfoliators. Poppy seed, Jojoba seed and Date seed helps scrub away dead skin cells while the Salicylic Acid provides an all-around smoother, clearer looking complexion. Mix half a teaspoon with water or with a gentle cleanser, and gently massage over the whole face. Using this exfoliant once to three times a week depending on what your skin can tolerate.

Skincare in your 30’s

During your 30’s you may start to see some early signs of ageing occurring. Changes to the skin such as fine lines starting to appear and also any sun damage and pigmentation from your early years now start to become visible. This is the perfect time to start incorporating your active serums such as Vitamin A to help with ageing concerns and Vitamin C to help with brightening up the skin's complexion.

Increase cell turnover

Biopelle Retriderm Vitamin A Serum 0.5% Mild is a Vitamin A serum that is designed to increase cell turnover and to also help with ageing concerns. Using this serum every third night for the first two weeks then build up the frequency only as your skin can tolerate. Vitamin A should only used in the evening as it can increase UV sensitivity. Wearing a sunscreen during the day is a must when you're using any skin care product containing Vitamin A.

Antioxidant protection

A powerful combination of antioxidants will protect your skin from environmental stressors. Vitamin C serum helps to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and brightens up the skin's complexion. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum is a combination of 15% L-ascorbic acid, 1% Vitamin E, and 0.5% Ferulic Acid to enhance protection against environmental damage and premature signs of ageing. Apply this serum every morning after cleansing your skin.

Aspect Dr Resveratrol is a fantastic moisturiser to use in your 30's for helping combat any anti ageing concerns. Containing pure grape skin extracts, peptides, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients to nourish and restore the skin's moisture content. Using this product everyday in the morning before applying sunscreen and at night time as the last step in your routine.

      Skincare in your 40’s

Your 40’s is when most people really start to see the big changes in the loss of elasticity and more prominent fine lines and wrinkles are starting to be present in your skin. Incorporating or even stepping up your skincare products to something a little more stronger in active ingredients is going to really help in assisting in treating these concerns further.

      Nourish your eye area

It's time to combat multiple signs of ageing around the eye such as dark circles, fine lines and under eye puffiness. Biopelle Tensage Stem Cell Eye Cream is a rich, nourishing formulation ideal for the delicate eye area. A tiny pea sized amount is all that you need to apply around the eye area.

      Repairing peptides

Increase hydration and help relax facial muscles to reduce the appearance of fine lines with Synergie SuperSerum +. Containing DNA repairing peptides and marine biotechnology to form an essential serum to target visible signs of ageing. For optimal results it's best to use in both the morning and evening after cleansing the skin.

Eliminate any dead skin cell build up to reveal a more smoother texture by using a potent antioxidant-rich fruit enzyme exfoliating mask. Aspect Fruit Enzyme Mask is best applied on a dry face and massaged into the skin, then rinse off with water after five minutes.

      Skincare in your 50’s

As women age, estrogen levels throughout the body naturally decline. This decrease in estrogen leads to Estrogen Deficient Skin, which accelerates collagen loss and visible signs of skin ageing. Exclusive MEP Technology is proven to help restore the natural function of Estrogen Deficient Skin by addressing a root cause of accelerated skin ageing.

      Restore estrogen

Emepelle Serum is a silky smooth, lightweight and fast absorbing serum ideal for perimenopausal and menopausal skin. This serum features breakthrough MEP Technology along with other proven ingredients to help provide additional anti-ageing benefits while helping to restore the natural function of Estrogen Deficient Skin. Use this daily in the morning after cleansing the skin. For optimal results, use Emepelle Serum in the morning and Emepelle Night Cream in the evening.

      Restore estrogen and hydrate

A luxurious and restorative night cream that aids in the skin’s night time repair activities to help restore luminosity to ageing skin. Emepelle Night Cream includes retinol (Vitamin A), niacinamide (Vitamin B), peptides and breakthrough MEP Technology to help restore the natural function of Estrogen Deficient skin. If you have not used a retinol before it is recommended to begin using Emepelle Night Cream two to three nights per week and slowly increase usage as your skin tolerates. For optimal results use Emepelle Serum in the morning and Emepelle Night Cream in the evening.

      Eye area TLC

In our 50's the fragile skin surrounding your eye area needs a little more TLC. Cosmedix Eye Genius Brilliant Eye Complex features a cocktail of firming peptides that gives the skin an instant radiant appearance. This eye complex helps improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness. Only a tiny amount of product is all you need for the delicate eye area.

      Skincare in your 60’s

Lack of hydration and moisture within the skin is a common concern that most people deal with in their 60’s. As we get older our cell turnover is a lot slower so it's essential to use products that are going to assist in increasing the cell turnover at a faster rate. Skincare such as Retinol (Vitamin A) products will help to aid in the cell turn over and rich, thick textured moisturisers will also help in locking in the moisture and hydration into the skin.

      Target wrinkles and skin tone

Dermaceutic Activ Retinol 0.5 is formulated with 0.5% Retinol alongside Vitamins C and E. This Vitamin A product targets uneven skin tone, wrinkles, fine lines and dullness. Use this only at night time starting off with every third night to begin with for the first two weeks then build up only as your skin can tolerate.

      Infuse moisture

A highly emollient formulation that is ideal for dry or mature skin exhibiting advanced signs of aging & skin damage. Biopelle Tensage Advanced Cream Moisturiser is best used in the morning before sunscreen application or at night time as your last step in your skincare routine.

      Cleanser to refine

Cleaning is just as important in your 60's as in your 20's. Aspect Dr Deep Clean is a purifying cleanser that contains a non-irritating botanical retinoid and a blend of natural occurring AHAs which will exfoliate, renew and refine your skin. Mix one pump with water and apply in circular motions over the whole face, then rinse with water.
